The Cultural Office for Upper Silesia was created on 1 March, 2017—in accordance with the further development of the federal government’s concept for the support of cultural work as per § 96 of the Federal Law on Expelled Persons [Bundesvertriebenengesetz]—at the foundation Haus Oberschlesien.
The Cultural Office supports the publicly impactful and cross-border transfer of knowledge on the culture and history of Upper Silesia, as well as cooperation with Poland and the Czech Republic. It is dedicated to the culture and history of Upper Silesia, today known as the Polish region of Woiwodschaften Oppeln and Silesia, as well as the Moravian-Silesian regions of the Czech Republic. The Cultural Office provides information on the various facets and interactions between the regional culture and history and raises public awareness of itself in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.
The Cultural Offices at the State Museums for the culture and history of the Germans in eastern Europe act as mediators with their own subsidies for cultural projects, especially in the area of youth and adult education. It is the goal of their work to transfer knowledge to dissemination and recipients domestically and abroad. The forms of events offered range from lectures, readings, concerts and film presentations, to exhibitions, seminars, workshops, excursions and study tours for various groups.
Our Cultural Office began its work on 1 November, 2019. The authority, created by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media in 2017, supports the publicly impactful and cross-boarder transfer of knowledge on the history and present of Silesia. This is furthermore supported by project cooperations and funding.
